 | POND FILTRATION
Top appreciate the beauty of a pond, maintenance needs to be easy and the water needs to look clean. A effective filter creates clean, clear water with only a few light cleanings a year. The filter's most important contributions is bringing the pond to life. Beneficial bacteria (microscopic organisms) live on filter media and break down toxins in pond water. As pond water moves over the filter media the bacteria clean and detoxify the water. The more filter media covered with bacteria the cleaner the water and the lower the maintenance.
Filter size requirements vary depending on water temperature, sunlight, stocking capacity, feeding habits, waste loads, cleaning requirements and local water chemistry. For a low maintenance water garden, a good rule of thumb is for the bio-mechanical filter to hold at least 3%-7% of the total volume of pond water in the filter. If the filter holds less than 7%, add an ultraviolet clarifier. These size recommendations assume the use of good filter media, such as mat or Savio Springflo Biofilter Media.
